Cancer Treatment: Cancer Immunotherapy Treatment in Bangkok, Thailand

Cancer Immunotherapy NK Cell Therapy

Cancer is a disease difficult to cure without detection in very early stages and immediate treatment. It represents a refractory disease which is the primary cause of death . At present, the standard cancer treatment consists of so-called three major therapies of surgery (surgical operation), radiotherapy, and chemotherapy (anticancer agents), and then hormone therapy is also applied for some cancers. Natural killer cells therapy is a form of cancer immunotherapy treatment which is showing benefit to early stage cancer patients.

Daily advances are seen in each therapy area, but a sufficient therapeutic effect is not obtained when each therapy is used alone, so combined modality treatments using combinations of these therapies are generally to be conducted. For example, in locally- limited cancer, it is anticipated that surgical resection can cure the disease, but resection is not possible for some regions of cancer. Radiotherapy can kill cancer cells, for which resection is not possible, by irradiation . But, many cancers are metastatic or advanced ones which cannot be managed by local therapies such as surgery and radiotherapy. In these cases, the only alternative is to rely on chemotherapy (anticancer agents) which can show effectiveness against systemic cancers. However, the effect of many anti- cancer agents entails extremely strong adverse drug reaction s (ADRs), and there is a great need for development of new anticancer agents with minimal ADRs, or any other more useful systemic treatments. In this context, natural killer cells therapy has been developed as a useful systemic treatment by focusing on mechanisms o f immune response to cancer cells and employing technical progress in immunology, molecular biology, and cell engineering.

Humans are naturally equipped with a function (immune system) which can recognized any foreign objects produced in the body and viruses or other pathogen invaded into the body as “non-self”, and removes these objects. Lymphocytes and other immune cells presented in the blood play essential roles in this function. Cancer and other illness break out when power balance between immune system and non-self in the body breaks down and shifts in favour of cancer or viruses. Cancer NK cell therapy is a treatment method which gives substantial artificial activation to functions of immune cells to shift power balance toward immunity and thereby eliminate cancer cells or suppress their growth. In practice, the process of that immune cells (e.g., lymphocytes) are collected from the blood of patient, substantially activated and proliferated outside the body, and then rein fused into the body of patient, is repeated. Natural killer cells therapy is available in Bangkok, Thailand.

Characteristic of Natural Killer Cell Cancer Immunotherapy

  1. It has no adverse reactions in essence, and maintains QOL (quality of life). Slight fever from immuno-cell activation may be rarely seen because use of proliferated and activated patient's own cells, but it has essentially no adverse reactions.
  2. Preventive effects against recurrence have been reported when it used as a postop- erative adjuvant therapy. As it acts against microscopic cancer which cannot be re- moved by surgery and remains in the body, it particularly suits for prevention of re- currence.
  3. Applicable to most cancer types It is applicable to most of all cancers, other than some blood cancers (e.g., leukemia, T-cell malignant lymphoma).

Natural Killer Cells - Cancer Immunotherapy Treatment:

1. γδT-cells Therapy : Therapy which administrates activated and proliferated peripheral lymphocyte, γδT-cells are dominantly activated and proliferated using IL-2.

Indication : Colon cancer, Head neck cancer, Breast cancer, Viral hepatitis

2. CIK+CTL-Cell Therapy : Therapy which administrates activated and proliferated pe- ripheral lymphocytes from the cancer patient by using anti-CD3-antibody
The activated and proliferated lymphocytes include CTL-cell, CIK cell, monocyte and other cells, in which CIK+CTL-cells are approximately 70% of all the cells.

Indication : Hematopoitic cancer(Leukemia ), Lymphoma, Hepatocellular cancer, Lung cancer, , Melanoma, Renal cell carcinoma, Cholangiocarcinoma.

3. DC Vaccine Therapy : Therapy which uses Dendritic Cells derived from peripheral monocytes and pulsed with tumor antigens. In this therapy, tumour antigen specific CTL can be induced in the cancer patients.

Safety and quality control

Cell processing for the NK cell Therapy used to be conducted under guidelines which each medical institution originally set. However, the natural killer cell Therapy is be- coming more prevailed, the strict guideline is required to ensure the high quality and the safety of cell processing in order for patients to receive the cancer immunoTherapy with the same quality and safety at any of the medical institutions nationwide. Providing support on technology and know-how to ensure quality and safety of processed cells.
