Stem Cell Eye Treatments: Within the family of “retinal degenerations” there are multiple known diseases which differ in their pathology, prognosis and visual symptoms. It is difficult to predict the extent of vision loss or how fast the disease might progress but in many cases people with retinal degenerative disease will eventually suffer complete vision loss. Eye disease treatment with stem cells is showing remarkable results in increasing the vision of our patients.
Over 200 million people worldwide suffer from blindness or low vision due to a variety of diseases, including retinal degenerative disease. The two most prevalent retinal degenerative diseases are – Age-related Macular Degeneration primarily affecting people age 60 and older, and Retinitis Pigmentosa which is the most common inherited cause of blindness in people between the ages of 20 and 60 worldwide4.
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) afflicts an estimated 170 million worldwide. Since AMD develops with age, with a growing aging population the trajectory is daunting – the number of people suffering from AMD is expected to rise to 196 million in 2020 and 288 million in 2040 (worldwide). Of the 15 million people currently with AMD in the US, over 2 million people suffer from late-stage AMD. The World Health Organization estimates that of the 39.3 million blind people across the world close to 2 million people (5%) are blind due to AMD.
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) afflicts approximately 100,000 people in the US and an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide. The number of people suffering from RP has been fairly consistent throughout the years but the disease appears in patients at a fairly young age. Most patients with RP are considered legally blind by the age of 40 and in the US 20,000 are totally blind.

STEM CELL EYE DISEASE TREATMENT
The ability of stem cells for eye disease treatment is of great interest to both researchers and clinicians because currently there is no therapy to cure ocular neurodegenerative diseases & Injury. The use of naïve Mesenchymal stem cells are showing great benefit to patients with both eye disease & trauma related conditions of the eye. This is because the extraocular stem cells used can stimulate new formation of Ocular stem cells including limbal (corneal) stem cells, conjunctival stem cells and retinal stem cells.
Although the retina is a complex structure, Stem cell migrations supported with increase repair signals have the ability to repair this structure. Firstly the stem cells will improve the epithelial monolayer: the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Although the RPE is not a defined part of the retina, it is an essential supporting tissue involved in retinol cycling, nutrient transport, growth factor production and phagocytosis of the fragile photoreceptor (PR) outer segments (OSs). This will continue to more structural repair in months 4-6 and with follow up treatments.
We would recommend using purified Umbilical-cord tissue derived MSCs passage 1, combined with eye cell peptides, growth factors and laser therapy. This program is performed over 7-14 days with a recommended repeat treatment at 3-4 month stage.
